Consulting Has Been Our Specialty Since 1987

President & Founder James P. Butler formed Vista Consulting Services, LLC in 1987 building from his successes earned while serving as founder and CEO of Housing Opportunities, Inc. (HOI), a community-based non-profit aimed at addressing the needs of distressed communities. Jim began his career in housing and community development in 1975. Knowing that homeownership was a key ingredient to neighborhood stability and community revitalization throughout the years Jim developed several innovative fee-generating and asset-based entrepreneurial mortgage lending products.

Vista has a proven track record of success.

CDFI Fund With The US Treasury:

Jim developed a CDFI fund with the U.S. Treasury; HOI was selected as one of HUD’s first National Housing Counseling Intermediaries; and the Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency utilized HOI’s expertise on entrepreneurial approaches for nonprofit agencies to establish a statewide housing counseling network. As part of these contracts, Jim provided training workshops on mortgage financing, housing counseling, and entrepreneurial approaches for nonprofit organizations throughout the state. HOI evolved into six nonprofit entities, holding multimillion-dollar government contracts with a network of 73 housing counseling agencies throughout 17 states.

Pittsburgh Partnership Neighborhood Development:

Jim has worked with Pittsburgh Partnership Neighborhood Development to assist with HUD programs for the East Liberty neighborhood of Pittsburgh. Jim also conducted a study for the GSPIA Housing Clinic of the University of Pittsburgh, did an analysis on Captive Insurance Companies for the Federal Home Loan Bank of Pittsburgh; and did a comprehensive report on Appraisal Gap Insurance Products for Radian Guaranty mortgage insurance company. Jim was a collaborator on articles/studies on HOI’s successes, that were published over the last 30 years.

Addressing Social Needs through Scale & Leverage

At Vista, we recognize the significant changing philosophies when it comes to meeting social and community challenges; therefore, we think it is important to share two distinguished professionals’ viewpoints – Michael E. Porter and Bruce Katz. Each one highlights new ways of thinking when it comes to delivery systems.

Social Change – Ted Talk | Length 16:15

TEDGlobal 2013: The Case for Letting Business Solve Social Problems

Speaker: Michael E. Porter · Business strategist

Michael Porter argues that companies must begin to take the lead in reconceiving the intersection between society and corporate interests -- and suggests a framework of "shared value" and “building scale” which involves creating economic value in a way that also creates value for society.

Mr. Porter is an American academic known for his theories on economics, business strategy, and social causes.  He is the Bishop William Lawrence University Professor at Harvard Business School where he leads the Institute on Strategy and Competitiveness, studying competitiveness for companies and nations -- and as a solution to social problems.
